What You Need to Know About Metal Furring

What is a Metal Furring?

Furring, in general, refers to using metal or wood strips to keep other materials in place. Metal furring then is a non-structuralmetal attachment used as a support system for a finished material. Additionally, metal furring price in the Philippines is dependent on the thickness of the material.

What are the Types of Metal Furring?

Metal furring comes in different shapes and sizes, mainly dependent on the purpose it will be used for. The bends of the metal furring’s shape contribute to the overall rigidity of the wall system.

Hat-shaped bent metal. This is the most used shape of metal furring, with 7/8" high and 2 1/4" wide specifications. This type is used to secure the finished material’s outer layer (can be in the form of concrete, concrete block, plaster wall, etc.) where inserting screws and nails would otherwise be difficult.

Z-shaped furring. Coming with a Z shape, it is designed to be attached to one surface at the bottom flange and accept an outer layer of material attached to another flange. The most common thickness of this metal furring type is 1” to 3.” It is suitable for commercial and resident applications since it allows room for insulation and installation of horizontal electrical or plumbing items.

What are the Benefits of Using Metal Furring?

Drywall. When the drywall and its supporting members are too wide apart for direct application, metal furring can be utilized. For instance, bar joists spaced further apart than how far the drywall can span can have either a hat or Z-shaped furring attached. You may take a look at your ceiling – since drywall cannot be attached directly to the roof, a metal furring system is applied.

Building codes. The use of furring strips between drywall layers is normally required by city and state building codes. This is to achieve the required fire ratings.

Executing a metal furring system addresses not only the construction guidelines but also makes fastening techniques easier to work with and acts as an effective support method. If you are looking at purchasing materials, the metal furring price in the Philippines ranges from ₱118 to ₱143.
